On the evening of June 21, 2026, a trained spotter measured a 2.75 inch hailstone near St. Petersburg, a crossroads locality on the Logan-Phillips county line — one of the largest measured hailstones in Colorado all season. Five reports came in over one hour, in a tight cluster over farm country.

The storm was warned before it produced: a severe thunderstorm warning at 7:13 PM gave 17 minutes of lead before the first 7:30 PM report, and a second warning at 7:44 PM covered the 2.75 inch stones at St. Petersburg. Radar agreed on location — the report area sits inside the radar-estimated 1.75 inch contour — but the measured 2.75 inch stone ran above what radar estimated there, one more case of ground truth out-running the algorithm.

Why a measured 2.75-inch stone matters

Published impact studies put the onset of functional damage near 1.00 inch for three-tab shingles, 1.25 inches for architectural shingles, and 2.00 inches for Class 4 impact-rated products. A measured 2.75 inch stone is past the threshold for every asphalt product made, and stones in this class dent metal roofing and grain bins and break skylights and equipment glass.
