Gutter Services — FAQ

Professional gutter cleaning in metro Denver costs $150–$350 for a single-story home and $250–$550 for two-story, depending on linear footage and debris volume. Add 20–40% for steep-pitch or three-story homes. Cleaning is recommended twice a year — late spring (after cottonwood seed and pollen drop) and late fall (after leaf-fall). Front Range homes near mature trees may need 3–4 cleanings per year. Red Hawk includes gutter cleaning as part of every roof inspection at no charge.

Seamless aluminum gutters installed in Colorado run $7–$13 per linear foot, depending on size (5-inch standard, 6-inch upgrade), gauge (.027 vs .032 thickness), and color. Steel gutters cost $9–$16 per foot. Copper gutters are premium ($25–$45/ft). For a typical 2,000 sqft Colorado home with 150 linear feet, full gutter replacement runs $1,200–$2,500 in standard aluminum, $1,800–$3,200 in heavy-gauge with leaf guards. Red Hawk fabricates seamless gutters on-site to exact lengths, eliminating mid-run seams that leak.

Quality gutter guards reduce cleaning frequency by 70–90% but don't eliminate maintenance entirely. Micro-mesh stainless steel guards (LeafFilter, Gutter Helmet, Red Hawk's preferred system) keep out pine needles, cottonwood seeds, and shingle granules — the worst Colorado debris. Foam inserts and reverse-curve plastic guards are cheap but deteriorate within 3–5 years and clog around the inserts. Cost: $7–$13 per linear foot installed. Pays for itself in cleaning costs after 5–8 years. Red Hawk recommends micro-mesh on properties with overhanging trees.

Seamless gutters are formed on-site from a single coil of aluminum or steel, cut to the exact length needed with the only seams at corners and downspouts. Sectional gutters come in 10-foot pre-formed pieces that snap together with seam sleeves every 10 feet. Every seam is a potential leak point — sectional gutters typically develop leaks within 5–10 years, seamless within 20–30 years. Seamless cost is 20–30% higher than sectional ($1,800 vs $1,400 on a typical home). Red Hawk only installs seamless residential gutters.

5-inch K-style gutters are standard for most Colorado homes and handle typical Front Range rainfall (15 inches/year on average). 6-inch K-style gutters carry 40% more water and are recommended for homes with large roofs (3,500+ sqft), steep pitches, or significant rooftop drainage that overwhelms 5-inch capacity. 6-inch upgrade adds $1.50–$2.50 per linear foot. For homes near foothills (Boulder, Conifer) where high-intensity summer storms are common, 6-inch is often worth the extra cost. Red Hawk recommends sizing per the actual roof area drained.

Aluminum is the standard for Colorado — lightweight, won't rust, paint-fused finish lasts 20+ years, costs $7–$13/linear foot installed. Heavier .032-gauge aluminum performs better in hail country. Steel gutters are stronger and dent-resistant but can rust at scratches; cost $9–$16/foot. Copper is premium ($25–$45/foot), patinas naturally, lifetime durability, and never paints. Vinyl gutters are budget-only and crack in Colorado UV/freeze-thaw within 5–10 years; Red Hawk doesn't install vinyl on residential. Aluminum at .032-gauge is our most-recommended for Front Range homes.

Downspouts should be placed at every corner of the home and every 30–40 linear feet along straight runs. Each downspout drains roughly 600–800 sqft of roof area. Outflow must extend at least 5 feet from the foundation via splash blocks, buried drains, or extensions — water dumped at the foundation causes basement leaks and foundation settling, the #1 cause of structural damage on Colorado homes. Downspouts should drain to grade, never tied into sewer lines (illegal in most Front Range jurisdictions).

Ice dams form when snow melts on a warm roof surface, refreezes at the cold eave, and backs water up under the shingles. Prevention is a system: improve attic insulation (R-49+ in Colorado), seal attic air leaks, increase roof ventilation (ridge vent + soffit vent), and install ice/water shield at eaves during the next roof replacement. Heat tape on gutters and roof edges is a treatment, not a prevention. Red Hawk's free roof inspection includes attic ventilation assessment and ice dam risk evaluation.

Heat tape (or heat cable) prevents ice dam buildup on roof eaves and gutters by maintaining 35–40°F at the gutter surface. It's a treatment for chronic ice dam problems, not a substitute for proper attic insulation and ventilation. Cost: $10–$25 per linear foot installed plus $10–$30/month electricity during freezing weather. Best for north-facing eaves on shaded homes, roofs over heated garages, and historic homes where insulation upgrades aren't practical. Red Hawk installs heat tape only after diagnosing the underlying ventilation problem.

Red Hawk's gutter installations carry a 5-year workmanship warranty covering leaks at corners, downspout connections, and fastener pull-throughs. Aluminum gutter material warranties cover finish (20-year fade warranty on baked-enamel) and structural integrity (30-year). Heavy-gauge steel and copper carry lifetime structural warranties. Gutter guards (micro-mesh) typically include a transferable lifetime no-clog warranty. Color-match warranty ensures the gutter color stays within 1 Delta-E tolerance for 15+ years. All warranties are documented at install completion.
